What Is Tajweed?

The terms "Tajweed" and "Tajwid" are frequently used in relation to Quran recitation. It derives from the Arabic term   , which linguistically refers to enrichment or making something exceptional.

In Quran recitation and reading, Tajweed is essentially a collection of linguistic and phonetic guidelines used for accurate Quran recitation, just like the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did.

Tajwid is one of the vital sciences in Islam and Al Quran. It is a science of rules derived from the recitation of the noble Quran by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) after hearing the revelation from the Angel Gabriel (PBUH).

It is the skill of preventing the tongue from making a mistake when reciting the verses of the holy Quran. With Tajweed, you can learn to accurately pronounce the letters and words in Quran verses, giving each letter its proper place when reciting the Quran. In addition, Tajweed makes Quran recitation soulful and euphonious.

 Principles of Tajweed

A person who wants to learn a science must be familiar with its fundamental concepts to understand it. Here are the principles of Tajweed to learn its basic concepts:

  1. Definition

Literal definition: Enrichment

Applied definition: Giving each letter its proper rights and articulating every letter from its articulation point. The rights of the letters are essential features that never change. The dues of the letter are its features that are present for some time but not at other times like the medd and idgham

     2. Formation

The Noble Hadiths as well as the words of the Glorious Qur'an.

     3. Fruits

Protecting the tongue from making errors in pronunciation while reading the noble Qur'an.

      4. Priority in Importance

Because of its connection to Allah's words, it is one of the most revered and greatest sciences.

    5. Its Place within the Sciences

It is one of the Islamic law sciences that is connected to the holy Qur'an Majeed.

     6. Founder

The holy Qur'an was revealed to the Messenger (PBUH) with Tajweed from Allah, the Most High, and he received guidance from Jibreel (PBUH). He then taught it to his companions, who ‌passed it on to their followers, and so on, until it reached us through these chains.

      7. Precept

Tajweed application is fardh 'ain, required by all Muslims (men and women) who have memorized the entire Qur'an or a portion of it, even if only one surah. Tajweed knowledge is fardh kifayaah, indicating some Muslim communities must know it.

        8. Justifications for its Rules

Protecting and maintaining the holy Quran Kareem from alterations. After the dawn of Islam, Arabs mixed with non-Arabs, and Muslims feared that this intermixing would contaminate the Arabic language. Establishing Tajwid guidelines became necessary to ensure accurate recitation of the Quran in accordance with the Quran's integrity of pronunciation and preservation of the holy Qur'an from errors.

       9. Principles of Tajweed

Learning Tajweed depends on these four principles:

  1. Knowing the articulation points of letters
  2. Learning the characteristics of letters
  3. Knowing Tajweed rules
  4. Tongue exercises and repetition

Common Tajweed Errors

The Tajweed mistakes mentioned here are not for beginners students who are learning letters and practicing simple things like how to say  . It is intended for individuals who are learning Tajweed.

The most common Tajweed mistakes include:

1- Light and Heavy Letters

There are two types of Arabic alphabet: Heavy letters and Light letters.

There are seven large letters   . The back of the tongue, which is the deepest part, must be raised when articulating these letters. These letters became heavy as a result of the more space in the mouth.

The letter Laam

Except , the remaining letters are light. Laam is always light, except in the word , which is heavy unless a letter with the vowel Kasra was present before it. The word Allah is preceded by   the Quranic term Fatha rather than Kasra, making the lam heavy. The word Allah is preceding with kasra, making it light. To distinguish between the heavy and light sounds of lam in the word Allah, listen to the Quran audio.

Additionally, make sure you pronounce Laam light in all other words because most non-Arabic speakers pronounce it heavy because they think Laam sounds like the letter L in English.

Example

An illustration of how individuals mispronounce heavy and light letters. The word in sura Alfatiha, some people pronounce with a heavy tone that sounds like . Some people make  heavy that sound like. Of course, some people pronounce light, which makes it sound like the word .

Note: The heavy and light letters require a lot of listening and practice to pronounce correctly.

2. Reading Shadah

This symbol is known as Shadah. The letter with this symbol is frequently pronounced like any other letter with a vowel.

Shadah denotes the doubling of a letter. The letter is, therefore, continuously spoken twice. The first one features the consonant (Sukoon), while the second has the Harakah (vowel), which can be Fatha, Kasra, or Damma.

As an illustration: . Shadah is here at noon. The first noon is consonant and will therefore sound like (in). The other has fatha which will sound like (na) . The pronunciation of this word is ‘In Na’.

Keep in mind that each letter should be pronounced simultaneously rather than individually.

3. Qalqalah

A Tajweed rule known as "qlaqalah" is used to pronounce certain Arabic letters When Sukoon is there in these letters. There are numerous videos online that can assist you to read Qalqalah properly.

Keep in mind that if other letters have Sukoon, you shouldn't form Qalqalah with them. Additionally, if the letter contains a vowel other than Sukoon, do not attempt to make it!

4. Long and Short Vowels (Madd rules)

Three different vowels can be used in the letters. Fatha , Kasra , and Damma  . When the sound needs to be short, those are the short vowels.

If an Alif was followed Fatha , the sound is longer on two counts. Yaa following Kasra . Waw after Damma . Because of the Madd (vowel) letters , this is the second level, which is just two counts long.

We should prolong for four or six counts in the long Madd. Here's a summary of it all. The long Madd can be divided into two categories:

When after a Mad letter, there is Hamza first. like  . This should be stretched to four or five counts. Second, when a letter from Shadah follows a letter from Madd  . This should be extended for six counts.

5. Rules For Noon Tanween and Sakinah

As with the previous ones, applying these is not as important. Still, you should learn this, though, when you have achieved a good level in Tajweed. Your Quran recitation will be considerably better.

You should always keep in mind that when they have Shadah, you should make Ghunna (the sound from your nose) with .

Noon and Tajweed's sound becomes hidden is merged completely after  . Because of this, Noon or Tanween are near to being silent.
